Abstract

La retinopatía del prematuro (ROP, por sus siglas en inglés) es una patología que afecta a recién nacidos pretérmino y altera el desarrollo vascular de la retina. El riesgo de padecerla es inversamente proporcional a la edad gestacional y supone la posibilidad de pérdida visual muy elevada en caso de no ser tratada oportunamente. La estandarización en los criterios de diagnóstico y clasificación se han actualizado con el tiempo. El último consenso de clasificación permite categorizar de manera específica el desarrollo y la evolución de la enfermedad, ayudando a determinar el momento específico para tratar cada estadio. Gracias al avance de la tecnología actualmente disponemos de diversas herramientas diagnósticas dentro de las cuáles resalta la telemedicina ayudada por fotografía, esto permite ampliar el espectro de pacientes capaces de ser diagnosticados, ya que no requiere la presencia física de un especialista en el lugar de evaluación. En cuanto al tratamiento existen diversas modalidades terapéuticas, entre las que destaca el uso de antiangiogénicos (anti-VEGF) que permite continuar con el desarrollo vascular retinal, disminuyendo la posibilidad de complicaciones a futuro, así como la cirugía de pequeño calibre, que brinda la oportunidad de trabajar de manera más segura y controlada ante cuadros extremadamente complejos. Estas herramientas permiten disminuir las secuelas y el déficit visual asociado a largo plazo, alcanzando resultados visuales que otorgan a los pacientes la oportunidad de desarrollar una vida con menos limitaciones a futuro.
